In just three short days, thousands of baby seals in Canada have been killed for their fur.It has been heartbreaking to watch, but documenting this cruelty -- and exposing it to the world -- is essential if we are finally to end this slaughter. I have been in Canada, leading a skilled team of experts from The Humane Society of the United States and journalists to the ice floes in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
We've already been harassed by sealers -- who rammed one of our inflatable boats with their much larger vessel -- and by Canadian officials, who detained me and several members of our team for allegedly violating the conditions of our observation permits.
But those actions will not stop us from bearing witness to the horrors that are perfectly legal and acceptable in the eyes of the Canadian government: the bludgeoning, shooting, and skinning of hundreds of thousands of baby seals for their fur.
We can make the Canadian government stop this hunt. But it will require unrelenting pressure from people like you and me, who constantly tell Canada that we will not stand idly by while hunters kill hundreds of thousands of baby seals every year.
